Eight teams, four spots: Breaking down the IPL 2026 playoff permutations

With ten days remaining for the league stage to conclude in the Indian Premier League 2026, eight teams are in contention for the four play-off berths due to a late comeback by teams like Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

The defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the reliable Gujarat Titans were anticipated to qualify for the playoffs prior to the tournament’s commencement, and now Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had a slow start to the competition.

Before the competition began, it was anticipated that the reliable Gujarat Titans and the reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru would advance to the play-offs. After a poor start to the competition, Sunrisers Hyderabad are now also in the top group.

What has been most surprising is the quick decline of Punjab Kings, who have lost four straight games to be in a vulnerable position after controlling the first half of the league.

The two teams eliminated are the Lucknow Super Giants and the Mumbai Indians.

RCB has maintained the consistency that contributed to its first-ever IPL title last year.

On Wednesday night, they take on KKR, and a victory would guarantee them a spot in the playoffs. With 18 points being a safer number than 16, RCB would need another victory to guarantee a position in the last four. Last season, only the Mumbai Indians qualified with 16 points.

Among the teams in contention, RCB has the best net run rate with 14 points from seven victories in 11 games. Their final two league games after the KKR clash are against Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Punjab Kings, who are still in the top four after an outstanding run in the first half of the IPL, have lost four straight games due to poor bowling and fielding.

Their net run rate is still strong because of their strong lineup, and they should be able to advance in the competition with two victories in their final three games against the Mumbai Indians, RCB, and SRH.

With one point coming from a washout against KKR, they have 13 points from 11 games. They must defeat the Mumbai Indians at Dharamsala; if they don’t, they will be under tremendous pressure heading into the final two games.

The Gujarat Titans have not advanced to the playoffs since making their debut in 2022 only once. The Shubman Gill-led team has a strong top three and a bowling lineup that is operating at full capacity, putting them on track to qualify in the top two.

They are on the verge of earning a playoff berth with 16 points from eight victories in 12 games. The Chennai Super Kings and KKR are their next two opponents.

Another squad that appears to be peaking at the perfect moment is SRH, who have won six of their previous eight games. The aggressive batting lineup has performed admirably, and Pat Cummins’ bowlers have provided excellent support.

With two games remaining against CSK and RCB, they are at 14 points. With their net run rate of 0.031 in their favor, SRH would require at least two more points, if not four, to qualify for the playoffs. On Tuesday night, they lost to Gujarat Titans for their fifth defeat in 12 games.

CSK has won six of their last eight games after losing their opening three. Before facing SRH and Gujarat Titans in their final two league games, they would back themselves to win two points against the Lucknow Super Giants on May 15.

Teams in contention will face each other over the following ten days, and just 18 points will guarantee qualification; CSK must win all of their remaining games.

After losing six straight games, the Ajinkya Rahane-led team managed to survive with victories in the last four games despite a terrible first half.

They may earn a maximum of 17 points, which might be sufficient for qualification, and they still have a game in hand compared to other teams. The final three games for KKR will take place at home.

Even with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel’s individual talents, the Royals have not been consistent. After winning four straight games at the beginning, they dropped five of their next seven games. Like the Punjab Kings, they have struggled with bowling.

The Royals, who have 12 points from 11 games, also need to win at least two of their next three games and pray that the other outcomes go their way. In their remaining games, they take on the Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Mumbai Indians, which would boost their confidence given how well those rival teams have performed.

Although the Axar Patel-led team has already begun preparing for the upcoming season, Delhi’s prospects are in jeopardy. Even though they defeated Punjab Kings, they still need to do more to advance to the playoffs.

They have 10 points after 12 games and can score up to 14 points. Large-margin victories might not be sufficient.
