CWG: Who has more at stake in Neeraj Chopra-Arshad Nadeem showdown in Glasgow?

India javelin throw champion Neeraj Chopra is working hard at his training camp in Switzerland ahead of his second Commonwealth Games appearance. He is expected to travel straight from his current training camp in Bienne (Biel) to Glasgow for the multi-sporting competition, which begins on July 23.

Due to an injury, Chopra was unable to compete in the 2022 CWG in Birmingham, despite having won a gold at the Gold Coast in 2018. After finishing fourth in the Doha Diamond League in June with an 85.69-meter throw, he will be competing in his second major tournament of the year in Glasgow.

The Glasgow CWG’s men’s javelin throw qualifying round is scheduled for July 30, while the final is scheduled for the next day.

Meanwhile, Arshad Nadeem, the Olympic gold medalist in javelin throw from Pakistan, has acknowledged that, as the reigning champion, he will face pressure at the next Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Nadeem is expected to reignite an old rivalry with Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra as he leads Pakistan’s team at the Commonwealth Games.

“There is more pressure on me because I am the defending champion in the coming games but I have prepared well,” Nadeem told PTI.

“It is good to be getting back to competition and yes I want to successfully defend my Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow,” he added.

Nadeem won the gold medal in 2022 in Birmingham with a throw of 90.18 meters in the absence of Chopra.

“I know what I need to do to regain the title in a strong field,” Nadeem said.

Nadeem’s lone significant victory over Chopra was at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where he won the gold medal with a 92.97-meter effort.

Although Nadeem and Chopra have faced each other several times in recent years, their most recent meeting at the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo resulted in disappointment for both of them.

Due to their injuries, Chopra and Nadeem disappointed their fans by finishing eighth and tenth, respectively.
