Suryakumar Yadav still in the frame for Team India comeback

According to a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Suryakumar Yadav might yet return to the Indian team if he regularly gets runs in domestic cricket.

Prior to India’s tour of Ireland and England, Suryakumar, who guided India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, was stripped of the T20I leadership and removed from the team after a period of poor batting performance. Shreyas Iyer was appointed T20I captain by the BCCI.

But under Iyer’s leadership, India’s fortunes have declined. In the five-match T20I series, the Men in Blue were defeated 0-4 by England after being whitewashed 0-2 by Ireland. The first game was abandoned due to rain.

According to a BCCI source, the board has not ruled out 35-year-old Suryakumar making a comeback. Even though he is not currently in the plans, he is still eligible for selection if he regularly excels in domestic cricket.

“Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently,” said a BCCI source.

Under the leadership of recently chosen captain Iyer, India lost by 56 runs in the fifth Twenty20 International at Southampton, losing the five-match series to England 0-4. India had earlier lost the second T20I by four wickets, the third by 125 runs, and the fourth by nine wickets.

The setback in England followed India’s 0-2 T20I series loss to Ireland earlier this year, which was the nation’s first-ever loss to the Irish in a bilateral T20I series.

In a match involving two or more matches, England’s victory also marks their first bilateral T20I series victory over India.

With batting stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma back in the team, India will now focus on the ODI series against England.
