Despite being fired from the position, Brendon McCullum is adamant that he can collaborate with England’s next Test coach.
After England’s 1-2 loss to New Zealand in a series that ended with red-ball captain Ben Stokes retiring from international cricket, McCullum was fired as Test manager.
However, McCullum is still in command of England’s white-ball sides and managed a 4-0 T20 series victory over India, the world champs.
McCullum’s team had additional success on Sunday, defeating India by 27 runs at Lord’s to win England’s first one-day international series since 2018.
Thanks to Ben Duckett’s 141 and fifties from Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, England scored 387-3, the highest ODI total at Lord’s.
Although England’s white-ball sides are improving, the Test team has lost seven of their last nine games going into a home series against Pakistan that begins next month.
When asked how he would deal with a new Test coach in a potentially unpleasant circumstance, AFP quoted McCullum as saying: “Collaboratively, I think. I think once the new coach is put in place, we’ll have a good conversation around everything.
“I think ultimately as long as everyone wants what is right for English cricket, there will be some give and take on certain things. That is the way it is.”
Former England coach Andy Flower has ruled himself out of taking over as Test coach after McCullum.
Among the front-runners to succeed McCullum are former Australia coach Justin Langer and former England batsman Jonathan Trott.
Prior to the ODI World Cup in South Africa next year, McCullum, a former captain of New Zealand, has been encouraged by England’s white-ball performance.
“I think we’ve seen some growth in the side over the last couple of series and there is some more growth to come, which is exciting and where my focus is on,” he said.
