FIFA has launched an investigation into the heated scenes that broke out after Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina in the World Cup final.
World football’s governing body has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to look into the post-match brawl.
Tempers flared after Spain won their second World Cup title thanks to Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner. Argentina had already been reduced to 10 men in the 93rd minute after Enzo Fernandez was sent off for a second yellow card.
After the final whistle, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes got into a confrontation with several Spain players, including Eric Garcia and Gavi. The incident quickly escalated into a mass brawl involving players from both teams.
Players pushed and shoved each other before they were separated. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni was also seen trying to calm his players as tensions remained high after the match.
FIFA has not said when the investigation is expected to be completed.
