Women’s T20 World Cup: Shafali Verma stars as India beat Bangladesh by 5 wickets

Despite yet another subpar fielding performance from India, Shafali Verma crushed the Bangladeshi attack with a 34-ball 53 to set up a five-wicket victory in the Women’s T20 World Cup in Manchester on Thursday.

Bangladesh managed to score 136/8 at Old Trafford, setting a new low for India’s terrible fielding in the tournament thus far.

Up to four catches were dropped during the powerplay by India, who lost to South Africa mostly as a result of their subpar fielding. India was able to reach the target in 16.5 overs because to Shafali’s explosive start. Jemimah Rodrigues (26 off 15 balls) brought India quite near to the finish line after a little lull in the middle overs.

India must defeat Australia on June 28 in order to advance to the semifinals after losing to South Africa.

In the powerplay, Shafali led India to 63/1 before Smriti Mandhana fell cheaply. Shafali repeatedly unleashed the inside-out stroke, punishing both pacers and spinners with equal contempt.

In the eighth over, she reached her second World Cup fifty off 29 balls, putting India on the verge of a significant victory. After under-edging a delivery from Nahida Akter in the ninth over, the powerful opener was stumped in an odd way when she went for a nonexistent single without realizing the wicketkeeper had gathered the ball and removed the stumps.

Earlier, each of the four opportunities was rather simple, but the fielders mishandled them. Nandni Sharma, Yastika Bhatia, and Radha Yadav, who had missed two opportunities in the previous game’s defeat to South Africa, were among the guilty.

Juairiya Ferdous, who was dropped three times by the fifth over, benefited most from India’s lack of discipline. Ferdous didn’t take full advantage of her good fortune, although she did hit several fine boundaries.

Nandni, who had dropped Ferdous and Sobhana, received two warnings for sprinting on the field. Mostary made a quick return catch to dismiss Ferdous after a string of consecutive balls. Off 31 balls, the opener scored 33.

So far in the tournament, India has performed poorly in every area. The Indian team management has made excessive changes in the pace department, excluding people like Kranti Gaud.

Renuka Thakur played her first match of the competition on Thursday, and she struck in the opening over. Dilara Akter (4), the opener, attempted a pull but was unable to get past Shree Charani at deep square leg. In an outstanding 20th over, Charani claimed two wickets while conceding only 3 runs.

In contrast to her fielding, Radha (3/28) performed better with the ball, dismissing Mostary (22 off 26 balls) and opposition captain Nigar Sultana (32 off 27 balls) in rapid succession.

Spinners have been receiving more help due to the exceptional heat in the UK. In Bangladesh’s innings, India also mostly relied on spin. In addition to the missed catches, India bowled three no balls and seven wides.
