FIFA World Cup: Switzerland edge Canada as both teams advance to Round of 32

Switzerland secured top spot in Group B and booked their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a 2-1 victory over Canada on Wednesday. Despite the defeat, tournament co-hosts Canada also advanced to the Round of 32 as group runners-up.

Switzerland finished the group stage with seven points, three ahead of Canada. The Swiss will stay in Vancouver for their next match, while Canada head to Los Angeles for their Round of 32 fixture.

The first half offered very little excitement, with both teams struggling to create chances. Only three shots on target were recorded, and the most notable moment came when Swiss captain Granit Xhaka and Canadian striker Cyle Larin were both booked after a disagreement over a quick free-kick.

The match came to life immediately after the break. Just one minute into the second half, 20-year-old Johan Manzambi set up Ruben Vargas, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to give Switzerland the lead.

The Swiss doubled their advantage in the 57th minute. Breel Embolo held up the ball inside the penalty area before laying it off for Manzambi, who finished confidently to make it 2-0.

Canada responded after coach Jesse Marsch made several changes. Substitute Promise David made an instant impact in the 76th minute, scoring with his first touch after collecting a pass from Nathan Saliba and curling a fine shot into the corner. The goal sparked huge celebrations among the home fans at BC Place.

Buoyed by the crowd, Canada pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. The fans continuously chanted “Let’s go Canada”, but Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced a series of important saves to protect his team’s lead.

Canada entered the match full of confidence after drawing with Bosnia and Herzegovina and then thrashing Qatar 6-0. However, they found it difficult to break down a disciplined Swiss side led by experienced players such as Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji.
