Vinesh Phogat Asian Games trial row: Wrestling Federation of India moves against High Court verdict

The Delhi High Court’s decision permitting grappler Vinesh Phogat to compete in the Asian Games 2026 selection trials has been challenged in court by the Wrestling Federation of India.

The Federation’s appeal will be heard on Friday by a bench of Justices P S Narasimha and Alok Aradhe.

A division bench of the high court approved Phogat’s participation in the forthcoming Asian Games trials on May 22, citing the WFI’s selection policy as exclusionary due to its lack of discretion to take into account a legendary player like her who is returning from maternity leave.

The WFI will videotape the selection trials, which are scheduled for May 30–31, according to the high court’s order. An impartial observer from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will also be present.
