Team India’s WTC Final chances take a hit after New Zealand thrash West Indies

New Zealand’s convincing nine-wicket victory against the West Indies in Wellington on Friday moved them up to third place in the World Test Championship 2025–27 standings, pushing India down to sixth place.

India, who finished second in the first two WTC cycles, were ranked fifth after losing 0-2 to South Africa at home last month. New Zealand was ranked sixth. But following the Kiwis’ significant victory in the second Test at Basin Reverse on Friday, the standings experienced a significant turnaround.

With 100 percentage points (win-loss percentage), Australia is still in the lead, followed by South Africa, the World Test champions, with 75 percentage points.

Pakistan (50) and Sri Lanka (66.67) are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. India’s win-loss % is 48.15, compared to New Zealand’s 66.67 percentage points thus far.

If England makes a comeback against Australia in the Ashes, India could fall much lower to eighth. With three games remaining in the series, the Australians are ahead 2-0. Sri Lanka will be India’s next Test opponents in August next year.

New Zealand’s chances of making a second World Test Championship Final appearance have also increased with the most recent outcome. On the third day at Basin Reserve, the Black Caps bowlers caused havoc. Jacob Duffy’s five wickets helped the hosts dispatch the West Indies for just 128 in their second innings.

Chasing 56 to win for a 1–0 series lead, New Zealand were calmly steered home by Devon Conway (28) and Kane Williamson (16) after the early loss of captain Tom Latham for 9.

The 2021 victors were able to move above Pakistan and India and join Sri Lanka in third place on the standings thanks to the victory, which earned them 12 important WTC points.

On December 18, New Zealand and the West Indies will play their third Test match at Mount Maunganui.
