Shubman Gill nears No. 1 batting spot as Jasprit Bumrah reigns supreme in Test bowling rankings

New Zealand pacer Matt Henry joined Jasprit Bumrah as the world’s top-ranked bowler in Test cricket on Wednesday, while India captain Shubman Gill moved up three places to take second place in the ICC ODI rankings for batsmen.

Gill presently trails New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell by just 24 rating points after the Indian captain benefited from his high scores against Afghanistan in the just finished three-match ODI series. Gill scored 84 and 154 in the first two games of the series, but he did not bat in the final ODI, which India won by 9 wickets.

In the most recent rankings, Ishan Kishan rose 21 spots to 43rd place among batters, and three Indian bowlers also saw significant improvements. Prasidh Krishna moved up 34 ranks to 58th, Arshdeep Singh moved up 16 spots to 22nd, while all-rounder Washington Sundar moved up 17 spots to joint 71st.

Rohit Sharma stayed in fourth place, but Virat Kohli dropped to third after missing the Afghanistan series owing to a hamstring injury. Shreyas Iyer advanced to 14th place, while KL Rahul dropped a few spots to 11th.

Henry, meanwhile, moved up to the top spot to share it with Bumrah after taking five wickets apiece in New Zealand’s massive 253-run victory over England in the second Test. After Jack Cowie and Richard Hadlee, a fast bowler from New Zealand has risen to the top spot after 36 arduous years.

“Pacer Matt Henry becomes just the third New Zealander to become the top ranked Test bowler as the 34-year-old joins India seamer Jasprit Bumrah at the top of the bowler rankings following his 11-wicket haul during the second Test against England,” the ICC said.

“Bumrah had occupied top position on his own since overtaking Kagiso Rabada in November 2024, but Henry climbs to the top after he played a major role in helping New Zealand level their three-game World Test Championship series with England at 1-1.”

“Henry joins Jack Cowie (1947) and Richard Hadlee (1984-1990) as New Zealanders to hold the premier ranking for bowlers in Test cricket, with the right-armer breaking a 36-year drought for the Kiwis in the category,” the ICC added.

Joe Root, England’s stand-in captain, moved up two ranks to reclaim the top spot among Test batsmen.
