A woman has filed a police complaint against Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel, claiming that he had sex with her under false pretenses of marriage and had assaulted and intimidated her.
Porel, who has previously visited the UK and Australia with the India A team, has vehemently refuted all accusations. Following the woman’s and her mother’s complaint on Tuesday at the Mogra authorities Station in the Hooghly district, authorities claimed they had started looking into the situation.
The woman said in the lawsuit that she and Porel had been dating for the previous three years, but that once disagreements arose last year, the cricket player allegedly began “distancing” himself from her.
She further said that although Porel had vowed to marry her, he is no longer willing to do so. The woman accused Porel of assault and criminal intimidation in her complaint, alleging that he had sex with her while promising to marry her.
“We have received a complaint and started an investigation,” PTI quoted a police official as saying.
Currently in Bengaluru, Porel refuted the accusations and called them untrue. He added that the police had not yet got in touch with him.
“I am playing well now, so various things are coming up,” Porel was quoted as saying in the media.
The 23-year-old said that once the police finished their preliminary investigation, he would provide a detailed response.
“I will talk about this when the police investigate. I have not spoken to the police yet,” he said.
Since 2023, Porel, a left-handed top-order batter, has played for the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League. Last season, he scored 108 runs in four innings for the Delhi Capitals. He played 32 first-class and 23 List A games for Bengal since making his first-class debut in the 2021–2022 season.
