Sai Sudharsan became the first batter in the IPL to be dismissed twice hit wicket. During Gujarat Titans chase of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s target of 256 in qualifier 1, Sudharsan was out in this bizarre fashion in the third over. The bat flew out of his hands and touched the stumps after bouncing off the ground
The incident happened on the third ball of the third over. Sudharsan played a cut shot off pacer Jacob Duffy and it initially looked like the ball had raced away for a boundary. But while the RCB players began celebrating, Sudharsan walked back in disbelief as Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill watched on in surprise.
What happened was unusual. After completing the shot, Sudharsan lost grip of his bat and it flew out of his hands. The bat bounced on the pitch before brushing the off stump, leading to a rare hit-wicket dismissal.
This was not the first time Sudharsan had been dismissed in such fashion. Back in IPL 2022 against Mumbai Indians, he was also out hit wicket. On that occasion, Kieron Pollard bowled a bouncer which Sudharsan tried to pull. He missed the shot, lost control of his bat and it crashed into the stumps.
Overall, Sudharsan became only the 20th player in IPL history to be dismissed hit wicket. His wicket also triggered a collapse for Gujarat Titans, who lost five wickets in the powerplay while chasing a huge target.
Earlier this season, there was also some debate over whether Nitish Rana had been out hit wicket during a match between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings. However, the last confirmed hit-wicket dismissal before Sudharsan came in IPL 2025. Interestingly, it also involved a Gujarat Titans player. Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis was dismissed hit wicket during the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians.
