In appreciation of his exceptional contribution to Indian cricket over the past few decades, former captain Rohit Sharma was conferred the Padma Shri.
The Padma Awards 2026 were presented by President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday night at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
India’s men’s squad won the Champions Trophy in Dubai in 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados in 2024 under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.
With 11,720 runs at an average of 48.83 and a strike rate of 92.97 in 285 matches, Sharma is among the most productive hitters in ODI history. He has three double hundreds and the greatest individual score of 264, among other world records.
After making his Test debut in 2013, Rohit played for India in 67 games and amassed 4,301 runs. With a career-high score of 212 against South Africa in 2019, he has amassed 12 hundreds and 18 half-centuries during his red-ball career.
Rohit was the top scorer in the format as of 2024, despite having made his T20 debut in 2007 and amassed 4231 runs in 159 games. He has won two T20 World Cups: as captain in 2024 and as a competitor in 2007.
After India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, Rohit declared his retirement from the format, making history as the first men’s player to appear in more than 150 T20Is.
