Manav Suthar, India’s newest spin bowling sensation, took his first five-wicket haul for Warwickshire against Somerset in the English County Championship. In 46.5 overs during Somerset’s second innings, Suthar, who was committed to play two red ball matches for Warwickshire, claimed seven wickets with 5/100.
After collecting four wickets (two in each innings) in his County debut against Yorkshire, Suthar took 2/50 in 18 overs in the first innings.
Suthar finished his brief English summer with 11 wickets from two matches. He made his Test debut earlier this month against Afghanistan with a 10-wicket haul and is predicted to become India’s front-line spinner in the longer version.
The Australian Test team’s seam bowling all-rounder Beau Webster took 4/23 when Somerset batted first and were dismissed for 208 in the match at Taunton. Both of Suthar’s victims in the first innings were tailenders.
Suthar scored 28 with three fours and two sixes after Warwickshire scored 330 in its opening essay, after 33 and 37 in the previous game.
After the pitch had somewhat eased out, Somerset scored 435 in the second innings, giving a better account of themselves. This came after Suthar had reduced Somerset to 148 for 6 at one point by taking three early wickets.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore (12) was stumped after he attempted to give Suthar the charge, only to have the bowler fire one wide and out of his reach. He initially caught Jordan Hermann (34) in the deep attempting to slog sweep him.
When Josh Shaw (22), the night watchman who had batted with determination, attempted to prod defensively, Suthar challenged his outside edge, and the ball sailed to the slip cordon. Later, Suthar cleaned up the tail once more to claim his first five-wicket haul.
