Due of smart sunglasses’ advanced communication functions, which enable live streaming and video calling via mobile data or Wi-Fi networks, the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has prohibited players and match officials from using them during the current IPL.
The BCCI ACSU has advised the league’s teams that it has observed certain businesses marketing and selling smart eyewear to players and support personnel.
“Kindly note that these devices are equipped with advanced communication features, including live streaming, sending and receiving text messages, as well as audio and video calling capabilities through mobile data or Wi-Fi networks,” the Board said.
“Accordingly, under the PMOA Minimum Standards, such goggles/glasses are classified both as an ‘Audio/Video Recording Device’ and a ‘Communication Device’. It is hereby notified that the possession and/or use of ‘Smart Goggles’ is strictly prohibited within the Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA),” it added.
In the current season, Romi Bhinder of the Rajasthan Royals received a warning and a fine of Rs 1 lakh after being seen on CCTV using a phone in the team dugout during a game. Players are not allowed to use communication devices in the designated PMOAs.
In its most recent recommendation, the Board warned of consequences for non-compliance and asked officials and players to deposit smart sunglasses before entering the PMOA.
“All players and support staff are directed to deposit such devices with the Security Liaison Officer (SLO), along with their mobile phones and smartwatches, upon entering the PMOA on match days,” the Board said.
“Failure to deposit such devices shall be deemed a breach of the PMOA protocols and may result in penalties under the PMOA Minimum Standards for IPL 2026,” it added.
Due to instances of code of conduct infractions during this year’s IPL, the BCCI had issued a tight procedure prohibiting players from going out late at night without the security team’s approval.
Due to security concerns and worries about honey-trapping, the Board has also prohibited visitors from staying in the hotel rooms of the players and support staff.
