Lionel Messi entered record books as World Cup’s all-time leading scorer when he scored both the goals in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria that secured the defending champions progress to the round of 32.
The Argentine captain found the net in the 38th and 95th minutes, taking his World Cup goal tally to 18. In doing so, he surpassed Miroslav Klose’s record of 17 goals to become the highest scorer in men’s World Cup history. His second goal also saw him move past Marta’s overall World Cup record of 17 goals.
“We’ve already given people many reasons to celebrate, but we’ll try to give them even more,” Messi said after the match. “The most important thing is qualifying for the next round. We always aim to win every game. This group enjoys being together, whether it’s training, competing or simply spending time with each other.”
Just days before his 39th birthday, Messi showed no signs of slowing down, taking his tally to five goals in just two matches at the tournament.
The evening did not start perfectly for the Inter Miami star. Argentina were awarded an early penalty after Lautaro Martinez was brought down inside the box, but Messi dragged his effort wide. It was the third penalty miss of his World Cup career, following misses against Iceland in 2018 and Poland in 2022.
Austria managed to keep Argentina at bay for a while, with David Alaba making two important interventions to deny Messi. However, the breakthrough eventually arrived in the 38th minute.
Thiago Almada sparked the move, combining cleverly with Facundo Medina before the ball found an unmarked Messi inside the area. The veteran forward calmly slotted home to give Argentina the lead.
Austria tried to respond after the break. Emiliano Martinez was forced into action to keep out Marcel Sabitzer’s free-kick, while Michael Gregoritsch headed over the bar as Ralf Rangnick’s side searched for an equaliser.
Argentina had chances to put the game beyond doubt, with Messi almost creating a goal for substitute Nico Gonzalez. The second goal finally came deep into stoppage time. Julian Alvarez’s shot was saved, but Messi reacted quickest to the loose ball and fired home from close range to seal the victory.
Argentina will face Jordan in their final Group J match, while Austria take on Algeria on Saturday.
