Ex-Sri Lanka cricketer Saman banned by ICC for Abu Dhabi T10 fixing attempt

An ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal convicted former Sri Lankan domestic cricketer Saliya Saman guilty of violating the Emirates Cricket Board’s (ECB) Anti-Corruption Code, resulting in a five-year ban from all cricket activities.

In September 2023, Saman was one of eight individuals accused with violating the Code.

Saman has already completed two years of his sentence because the ban is retroactive to September 13, 2023, when he was placed on temporary suspension.

Saman, 39, participated in 77 List A games and 101 first-class matches.

According to the ECB’s Code for the competition, the charges concern attempts to tamper with matches in the 2021 Abu Dhabi T10 Cricket League that were stopped by the ICC, the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (DACO).

Three charges have been brought against Saman: 2.1.1, 2.1.3, and 2.1.4.

Article 2.1.1 states: “Being party to an attempt to fix, contrive or influence improperly matches or aspects of matches in the Abu Dhabi T10 2021.”

Article 2.1.3 states that Saman provided “a Reward to another Participant in exchange for that player engaging in Corrupt Conduct under the Code.”

The following is stated in Article 2.1.4: “Directly or indirectly soliciting, inducing, enticing, instructing, persuading, encouraging or intentionally facilitating any Participant to breach Code Article 2.1”.
