Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, may be unable to attend the ICC Executive Board meeting in Dubai due to “domestic political issues.” The BCCI is scheduled to bring up the matter of India not receiving the Asia Cup trophy.
The Asian Cricket Council chairman, Naqvi, was to face the wrath of the BCCI for refusing to present the trophy to Indian players who refused to accept it from him because of his anti-Indian remarks. The four-day meeting started on Tuesday.
The specific political concerns that would keep him from attending the meeting were not mentioned by the PCB source. Since Jay Shah was chosen as the ICC’s chairman last year, Naqvi—who also serves as his nation’s interior minister—has not attended ICC meetings.
According to a PCB source, Sumair Syed, the Chief Operating Officer of the Board, will attend the chief executives meeting. Should Naqvi be unable to travel to Dubai, he may represent Pakistan at the crucial board meeting on November 7.
Despite the final being held in late September, the Asia Cup Trophy is still said to be secured in the Asian Cricket Council headquarters in Dubai. According to the source, Naqvi might attend the board meeting virtually.
The Pakistan minister, who triggered the trophy controversy by having it sent to the ACC secretariat in Dubai, has maintained that the Indian team must receive the trophy from him. He has also instructed ACC officials not to move the silverware without his approval.
The BCCI addressed a letter to the ACC requesting that the trophy be transported to Mumbai, but Naqvi is adamant that he will be the sole one to present it to an Indian team member and a BCCI delegate at a function in Dubai on November 10.
