T20 World Cup: Online abuse escalates as Pakistan fans target Salman Agha’s family

Cricket fans sent threatening messages to Salman Agha’s family after Pakistan lost to England in the T20 World Cup Super Eights match.

“Sending me or my innocent son abuse is not going to win you the World Cup Pakistani fans,” Salman’s wife, Sabe, posted on her Instagram account.

Following Pakistan’s two-wicket defeat in Tuesday’s encounter in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, the country’s fans also posted abusive remarks about other players.

Former captain Moin Khan recalled similar situations after Pakistan lost the 1999 World Cup final, and many social media users denounced the use of derogatory and threatening rhetoric against players and their families.

“It is totally unacceptable and the cybercrimes wing should investigate these threatening posts and punish them,” PTI quoted Moin as saying.

Every time the Pakistani cricket team loses a major ICC event, the supporters have been known to become extremely passionate.

When India defeated Pakistan in the World Cup quarterfinals in 1996, irate demonstrators stormed the homes of many players, including captain Wasim Akram.
