World Cup 2026: Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in fiery opener featuring three red cards

Mexico got the FIFA World Cup 2026 started with a 2-0 win over South Africa as the Group A clash saw as many as three red cards at the frenzied Azteca stadium.

Julian Quinones gave the co-hosts an early lead, setting the tone for a dominant performance. Raul Jimenez then eased any nerves among the home fans with a headed goal midway through the second half.

The match, however, turned heated after the break. South Africa were reduced to 10 men when Sphephelo Sithole was shown a red card early in the second half. His team-mate Themba Zwane was also sent off later, while Mexico’s Cesar Montes received a red card in the closing stages.

The three dismissals took some shine off what had otherwise been a festive atmosphere. Still, the home crowd had plenty to celebrate as Mexico secured an important win that strengthens their chances of progressing from a group that also features South Korea and the Czech Republic.

Despite the convincing result, Mexico coach Javier Aguirre was not entirely satisfied with his team’s display.

“This was a 4-0 match, we didn’t play good enough, but people are happy,” he told reporters. “It’s the start of the World Cup – we’ve put the nerves behind us and now we have three points. We’re thinking about what’s next.”

Mexico will next face South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18, while South Africa take on the Czech Republic in Atlanta.

The match also marked several milestones for the World Cup. It was the first edition of the tournament to feature 48 teams and the first to be hosted by three countries. It also kicked off in the first stadium to stage three World Cup opening matches.

Moreover, the tournament’s first game saw Mexico finally register their first-ever victory in a World Cup opener after failing to do so in their previous seven attempts. It was also the first World Cup opening match to produce three red cards.
