On the eve of their Women’s T20 World Cup opening match against bitter rivals India in Birmingham, Pakistan’s captain Fatima Sana had an injury scare during the team’s Saturday afternoon practice.
Ayesha Zafar, the opener, whacked Fatima flush in the knee with a straight drive, injuring her while she was bowling. With the help of her physiotherapist and other players, she staggered out of the ground in excruciating pain.
To the relief of the Pakistani squad, Fatima clarified during the pre-game news conference that the hit wasn’t severe and that she would be able to play on Sunday.
“It was just a normal shot from Ayesha and I was hit below knee. But I think it is good now,” PTI quoted Fatima as saying.
However, Fatima did not return for the rest of the practice, and the Pakistani team’s management remained silent about injury status.
