Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to be accompanied by parents on India tours

A day after the 15-year-old batting star received his maiden senior international call-up, the BCCI told AFP on Sunday that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can have his parents along on India’s international trips.

After winning the batting honours in this year’s Indian Premier League, Sooryavanshi was included in India’s T20 team for the tours to England and Ireland as well as the Asian Games.

For a tri-nation series, the left-handed opener is now in Sri Lanka with the India A team.

While informing that Sooryavanshi’s father left for Sri Lanka on Sunday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told AFP, “Also, if his parents want to go to England and Ireland with him, then we will make arrangements for their travel. They would be his best support system.”

The T20 world champions, India, will play Ireland in Belfast on June 26 and 28 before starting a five-match series against England on July 1. Japan will host the Asian Games in September and October.

Sooryavanshi was chosen after an incredible IPL season for the Rajasthan Royals, where he finished as the tournament’s top run scorer with 776 runs. Throughout the season, he scored five half-centuries and one century.

He won the Orange Cap for being the top run scorer, the IPL’s most valuable player, and the awards for up-and-coming players. He is expected to overtake the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut in 1989 at the age of 16 years and 205 days, to become India’s youngest player.

“With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him. Like everyone else that has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him. I think he just has picked himself,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar said.
