The teen batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is likely to be rewarded with a call-up to the India squad for the upcoming T20I tour of Ireland in June, after the IPL. Cricket experts and former players have been batting for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the India squad.
If the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decides to include him in the India squad for the T20I tour of Ireland, and the 15-year-old make his debut, then he would become the youngest player to play for India. Sachin Tendulkar had made his debut at the age of 16.
A report by The Indian Express says that Sooryavanshi could be picked for India’s upcoming tour of Ireland, where the team will play two T20 matches on June 26 and 28. A BCCI source said that his name is among those shortlisted by the selectors along with several other players.
The selectors are keen to fast-track the young Rajasthan Royals player, against a less formidable team. The report also mentioned that if Sooryavanshi performs well in Ireland, he could be considered for the next tour of Zimbabwe, where India will play three matches between July 23 and 26.
He has already received strong backing from former BCCI treasurer and current IPL chairman Arun Dhumal.
“What an amazing batting display by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi this IPL 2026 season. This prodigy certainly deserves to debut for Team India as the youngest, given his performances. It’s rare to find someone so talented at such a young age. He certainly deserves his name to be recorded as India’s youngest debutant,” Dhumal wrote on X.
Sooryavanshi’s rise in cricket has been nothing short of incredible. He first grabbed attention during IPL 2025. Rajasthan Royals signed the young player from Bihar for INR 1.1 crore, making him one of the youngest buys at the auction. On his debut, he made an instant impact by hitting a six off the very first ball he faced off Shardul Thakur.
Just a few days later, he truly announced himself by smashing a stunning 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, playing in only his third match.
After the IPL, he continued his form while playing for India’s Under-19 team. He scored heavily throughout the year, with several quick fifties and centuries. This consistent run started talks about whether the BCCI should fast-track him into the senior team, especially with the next T20 World Cup in mind.
Those discussions became even stronger after his brilliant innings in the Under-19 World Cup final against England, where he scored a record 175 off just 80 balls. His knock helped India win their sixth title and caught the attention of the cricketing world.
Even former England captain Michael Vaughan was impressed. He suggested that India should seriously consider picking Sooryavanshi soon after the youngster played another excellent knock, scoring 52 off just 17 balls, in Rajasthan’s opening match of IPL 2026 against Chennai Super Kings.
Sooryavanshi’s fearless batting has been one of the biggest reasons behind the growing excitement around him. He has taken on some of the best bowlers in the world without hesitation. In IPL 2026, he hit Jasprit Bumrah for two sixes in just five balls, including one off the first delivery.
He did not stop there. Against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he scored 19 runs in an over off Josh Hazlewood, hitting three boundaries and a six. In the same match, he also smashed back-to-back sixes off Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Former India cricketers including Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh are also calling for his inclusion in the India squad. However, former India captain and spinner Anil Kumble had advised caution, stressing not to rush the young talent’s cricketing journey.
