Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s fiery 97 off 29 balls during Rajasthan Royal’s Eliminator clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad created plethora of records, which included the teenage opener surpassing West Indies legend Chris Gayle for most sixes in a single IPL season.
His knock on Wednesday included 12 sixes and five fours at a strike 334.48, as he smashed 65 sixes in this season so far, breaking Gayle’s tally of 59 sixes in the 2012 edition. His record-breaking knock helped the Royals register a 47-run win over SRH and book their place in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans.
The 15-year-old smashed 12 sixes during his explosive knock, the most ever by a batter in an IPL playoff match. He went past Shubman Gill’s previous record of 10 sixes, which came against Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023.
Sooryavanshi has been especially destructive in the powerplay this season, scoring 490 of his 680 runs in the first six overs, the highest ever in IPL history. He is also the first teenager to score more than 600 runs in a single IPL season.
The young batter has now become the highest run-scorer among uncapped players in one IPL edition. He overtook his Rajasthan Royals team-mate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 626 runs in IPL 2023.
During the knock, Sooryavanshi also equalled Suresh Raina’s record for the fastest fifty in an IPL playoff match, reaching the milestone in just 16 balls.
He is now the first player in IPL history to hit 10 or more sixes in an innings on three separate occasions, going past Finn Allen. Overall in T20 cricket, Sooryavanshi has achieved the feat four times, matching the all-time record held by Gayle.
Eight of his 12 sixes came in the powerplay against SRH, which is now the most sixes hit by a batter in the first six overs of an IPL match.
