On his 54th birthday on Wednesday, former captain Sourav Ganguly received the ideal present and became the latest Indian cricketer to be elected into the ICC’s Hall of Fame. This decision was made during the international organization’s annual convention in Edinburgh.
With Ganguly’s induction, there are now 12 Indians in the ICC Hall of Fame.
Ganguly thanked Jay Shah, the chairman of the international body, and expressed gratitude to the ICC, calling it a “huge honor.”
The left-handed batsman, often referred to as “Dada,” received birthday greetings from all across the cricket world.
“Thank you ICC and Chairman Jay shah @JayShah for inducting me in the hall of fame .. it’s a huge honour ..One of the 10 Indians to be inducted in the hall of fame ever .. Amazing to be a part of some great names ..@bcci,” Ganguly, who retired from international cricket in November 2008 after playing his final Test against Australia, wrote on ‘X’.
Bishan Singh Bedi, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Vinoo Mankad, Diana Edulji, Virender Sehwag, Neetu David, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni are the other Indian members of the ICC Hall of Fame.
During his time as captain from 2000 to 2005, Ganguly made the most impact on Indian cricket by rebuilding the team in the wake of the match-fixing scandal.
India became a bold and competitive team under his direction, winning historic Test matches abroad and setting the stage for long-term success in the years that followed.
His joyous celebration at Lord’s following India’s incredible triumph against England in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final is still one of the most iconic pictures of his career.
In a spontaneous display of excitement and victory, Ganguly took off his shirt on the famous Lord’s balcony, and waved it high as the winning runs were scored.
Ganguly played in 311 One-Day Internationals, scoring 11,363 runs, and played 113 Test matches, scoring 7,212 runs.
Ganguly moved into cricket administration after hanging up his boots, eventually rising to the position of BCCI president. He took office on October 23, 2019, and served at the helm of Indian cricket until October 18, 2022.
He currently serves as the Bengal Cricket Association’s president.
