India T20I captain and middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer reached 5,000 international runs on Wednesday. Iyer reached this milestone on Tuesday at Chester-le-Street during India’s first Twenty20 International against England. He scored a superb 47-ball 68 with six fours and a six at a strike rate of more than 144.
Iyer has scored 5,031 runs at an average of 39.61 with a strike rate of 96.06 in 147 games for India. He has six hundreds, 37 fifties, and a highest score of an unbeaten 128.
Iyer has scored 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86 in 14 Test matches for India, including a century, five fifties, and a top score of 105.
Iyer has amassed 3,035 runs in 73 innings at an average of 45.98 in 79 ODIs, his best format. He has batted at a strike rate of 98.60 with a top score of an unbeaten 128.
He has amassed 1,184 runs in 50 innings at an average of 30.38 in 54 Twenty20 Internationals, with a strike rate of over 135, nine fifties, and a highest score of an unbeaten 74.
Hard-hitting Abhishek Sharma, who broke West Indies’ Evin Lewis’ record of 789 balls to reach the milestone in only 785 balls—the fastest by a player from a Test-playing nation—also made it a historic match.
Abhishek has 102 T20I sixes after scoring an aggressive 59 in 24 balls with six fours and four sixes at a strike rate of over 245.
India reached 189/7 in 20 overs thanks to strokes from Iyer and Abhishek as well as a powerful cameo from Shivam Dube (42* in 21 balls, with two fours and three sixes). However, rain prevented England from batting and the match was abandoned.
Manchester will host the second Twenty20 International on Saturday, July 4.
