‘Numbers as good as Sachin and Virat’: Former cricketer backs Yashasvi Jaiswal to break Virender Sehwag’s 300 record

Following his most recent century against the West Indies in Delhi, former Indian batsman Mohammed Kaif lavished Yashasvi Jaiswal with praise, praising the youthful opener’s attitude and consistency. Jaiswal has what it takes to surpass Virender Sehwag’s illustrious record of triple hundreds in Test cricket, Kaif continued.

On the opening day of the second Test, the 23-year-old left-hander once again displayed his skill by scoring a fluid 175 before his time at the crease was cut short due to an unfortunate mix-up with captain Shubman Gill. Even though his dismissal was unfortunate, his innings had already established India’s supremacy and enabled them to take the lead on Day 2.

Jaiswal’s maturity and stroke play impressed Kaif, who compared him to contemporary greats Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli based on his early Test numbers. On social media, the former Indian cricketer expressed his adoration for Jaiswal and predicted that he will achieve greatness.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal is a batsman with the patience to score big hundreds and set new marks. In his first 26 matches, his numbers are as good as Sachin and Virat. Scoring at a high strike rate, his hundreds mostly put India on path to victory. Sehwag ka 300 wala record, Jaiswal hi todega,” Kaif posted on X.

The first Indian batsman to reach a triple century in Test cricket was iconic India opener Virender Sehwag. He accomplished the feat twice, in 2004 against Pakistan in Multan and in 2008 against South Africa in Chennai, scoring 309 and 319 runs, respectively.

Jaiswal’s performances continue to defy his age, which coincides with Kaif’s comments. With seven Test hundreds as an opener before turning 24, the young Mumbaikar is quickly establishing himself as one of India’s most reliable players in Test cricket—a feat that was matched only by South Africa’s Graeme Smith.

Before the age of 24, only Sachin Tendulkar had more Test hundreds for India. In a line-up full of young talent, Jaiswal stands out for his ability to combine patience and attack.
