‘Now it’s over’: Neymar hints at Brazil retirement after FIFA World Cup exit

Neymar hinted that he may have played his final match for Brazil after scoring in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The 34-year-old converted a penalty deep into stoppage time, but it was only a consolation as Brazil crashed out of the tournament and saw their wait for a sixth World Cup title continue.

Speaking to Brazilian broadcaster ge tv after the match, an emotional Neymar suggested his international career could be over.

“I tried, I tried… Now it’s over! I started here, I finished here,” Neymar said, referring to the stadium in New Jersey, where he made his Brazil debut in a friendly against the United States in 2010.

Neymar was in tears after the final whistle as Brazil suffered their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.

The defeat also means Brazil’s long wait for another World Cup title goes on. If they fail to win the tournament in 2030, it will mark 28 years since their last triumph in 2002.

If Neymar confirms his retirement from international football, he will finish his Brazil career with 80 goals and 58 assists in 130 appearances.

While Neymar enjoyed tremendous success at club level, his only senior international trophy with Brazil remains the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
