IPL 2026: Ishan Kishan gets SRH captaincy nod; Abhishek Sharma named vice-captain

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was named interim captain by Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday for the first half of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). Abhishek Sharma will serve as his deputy while Pat Cummins recovers from his injury.

Due to a stress injury to his lower back, Cummins missed a significant portion of the Ashes series in Australia and the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

“Pat Cummins will miss a few games while recovering from injury. Until he recovers, Ishan Kishan will be the captain and Abhishek Sharma will be the vice-captain,” the franchise said on social media.

However, the IPL 2016 winners SRH did not say how many games Cummins will miss.

Following a good run across formats, Kishan was appointed as SRH’s stand-in captain.

The left-handed batter, who finished as the fourth-highest run scorer in the competition with 317 runs in nine games at 199.37, was instrumental in India’s T20 World Cup winning effort. He scored three half-centuries and averaged 80.25.

In the ICC rankings for T201 batters, Kishan’s exploits with the willow also helped him move up to No. 2, behind Abhishek.

Kishan led Jharkhand to their first-ever victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, India’s top domestic T20 competition, earlier this season.
