RCB all-rounder Krunal Pandya claims that being “one step ahead” in the mental game was just as important as skill in the thrilling Indian Premier League match against Delhi Capitals.
Krunal emphasized that there were no demons in the wicket but rather that pacers Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were outstanding in the emphatic nine-wicket victory, which would be remembered for an amazing surrender of Delhi.
“To get six wickets in the powerplay, you have literally taken the game away from the opponent. The wicket wasn’t that bad, but it was pure skill set and why they are among the best,” PTI quoted Krunal as saying.
Krunal also discussed his own development as a bowler, stating that he intentionally tried to outsmart batsmen in a format that was becoming more and more dominated by power-hitting by introducing variations like the bouncer and variable trajectory deliveries.
“Every year the opposition prepares for you, so it becomes a mental game as well. I was thinking what I can add to be one step ahead. That’s where the bouncer and change in trajectory came in,” he explained.
The left-arm spinner admitted that performing these variations is physically taxing, especially for a spinner.
“It’s not easy for a spinner to bowl a bouncer. A lot depends on fitness. But I’ve never been scared to try new things. I took it as a challenge,” he said.
Speaking about his background in cricket, Krunal disclosed that his innovative style began years ago when he was playing on matting wickets and had to come up with new ideas after getting hit by batters.
“That’s where I learnt things like bouncers and wide yorkers. Over time, roles change, but this year I felt the need to add something new, especially with how aggressively batters are playing,” he said.
Krunal expressed caution about RCB’s campaign, stating that the club is not looking too far ahead in the competition despite the team’s overwhelming performance. With 12 points from six victories in eight games, they are now ranked second in the standings.
From here, RCB and Punjab Kings are the favorites to finish in the top two in the playoff race.
The 33-year-old praised Virat Kohli for his consistent success and referred to him as the “flag bearer” of Indian cricket’s fitness culture.
“To have that consistency for so many years is unbelievable. He has changed the way people see fitness in the sport,” Krunal added.
