IPL 2026 auction likely to be staged overseas: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is thinking of holding the next Indian Premier League (IPL) auction outside of India, according to a Cricbuzz report.

Abu Dhabi is a strong contender for the potential location, which is probably in the Gulf. Qatar and Oman are also in the running. The mini-auction was supposed to take place in India this time, according to earlier reports.

The inability to identify a suitable location in India is a major factor in the BCCI’s decision to seek an overseas venue.

It is challenging to find the perfect venue because the intended auction date conflicts with India’s festival and wedding season. Notably, the board is expected to declare the auction’s date and venue by November 15.

As reported earlier, franchises have until November 15 to submit their retention and release lists. One of the major talking points this season is a potential trade involving Sanju Samson, who, despite limited T20I opportunities, continues to be a prolific run-scorer. A final call on the proposed move is expected soon, coinciding with Rajasthan Royals owner Manoj Badale’s visit to India.

The IPL auction will be held abroad for the third year in a row, if the report is true indeed. The IPL auction for the 2024 season was held in Dubai, and the 2025 season was held in Jeddah.
