India suffer shock 34-run defeat to Ireland in T20I opener

Ireland made history by defeating India by 34 runs in their first-ever match in the opening Twenty20 International in Belfast on Friday. This is Ireland’s first win over India in any format and the hosts now have a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

After being asked to bat, Gareth Delany contributed a 32-ball 49 studded with three sixes and as many fours to post 182 for 9, while captain Lorcan Tucker led the way with a 36-ball 50 (5x4s, 2x6s).

Then, Ireland bowlers struck at regular intervals as Indian batters put on a careless display to be all out for 148.

It was not impossible to chase 183 on a pitch with considerable support for quick bowlers, but after powerplay, a different, practical strategy was required.

Earlier, India’s most successful bowler was pacer Harshit Rana (3/24), while Axar Patel (2/33) and Arshdeep Singh (2/28) also claimed two wickets.

Although Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s eagerly awaited international debut did not materialize, the enthusiastic crowd at Stormont Ground had much to celebrate as India dominated from ball one.

Although it was mostly a lone hand, Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker scored a half-century (50, 36 balls). As many would anticipate under these circumstances, the Indian quicks did not attempt to pitch the ball high and look for swing. However, they were paid generously for putting their faith in back-of-the-length delivery.

Ireland was only able to score 36 in the first six overs of the Powerplay, and the home team was reduced to 30 for three thanks to the expensive wickets of Tim Tector, Harry Tector, and Ross Adair.

Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson, respectively, received catches on Tim and Adair’s pull shots. Both were defeated by Rana, and the team management may have been impressed with his energy in the opening game following a four-month injury layoff.

When Arshdeep Singh (2/28) offered an unusual fuller delivery, Harry went for a drive, and Samson had an easy catch. Ben Calitz, who had hit two sixes off Prasidh Krishna, was removed by Shivam Dube, who also benefited from the reduced length.

Tucker scored 64 runs for the fifth wicket to save Ireland from a dangerous situation when they were 51 for four at the time.

Tucker started out slowly, but the right-hander quickly transformed into his aggressive, creative self to help his team advance. In the thirteenth over, Tucker smashed 4, 4, 6 against left-arm spinner Axar Patel (2/33) to reach his fifty in 35 balls.

For a border, there was also a beautiful scoop of Prasidh Krishna, who was pricey (0/57). However, Tucker’s short, pace-off ball from Rana wound up in Tilak Varma’s hands in the deep.

At the time, Ireland was 115/5. But between overs 14.3 and 17.1, Delany and George Dockrell contributed 49 runs to push them over 150.

When Prasidh’s lengths went wrong in his final over, Delany was harsh on him. In the 16th over, the potent right-hander hit the pacemaker for 4, 6, 6, and 6, taking 27 runs.

Delany (49), however, was unable to finish a well-earned fifty and lifted Arshdeep directly to Tilak close to the ropes.
