Hardik Pandya takes responsibility, says MI must answer ‘harsh questions’

After Mumbai Indians lost to Punjab Kings by seven wickets in an IPL 2026 match on Thursday, their skipper Hardik Pandya said that they have to reassess their campaign after four losses on the trot.

When asked about the team’s performance, Pandya said that an analysis needs to be done to see where the team is lacking.

“To be very honest, I don’t have much to say right now. I think we really need to go back to the drawing board and see where we are lacking. Is it individuals? Is it as a group? Is it as planning? We’ll just figure it out and see what we can do next,” Pandya said during the post-match presentation.

The MI skipper admitted that they were outplayed by Punjab, while also pointing to the changing conditions during the match.

“I think we need to give credit to them as well. The ball started reversing. In the second innings, the dew came, and it slightly got better, but having said that, they just outbeat us. They bowled better, they batted better, they fielded better,” Pandya added.

He hinted that some tough calls could be taken in the coming matches to change the momentum of the team’s campaign in the season.

“I think we need to see, do we need to make some difficult calls, or do we need to keep continuing and hope that we’ll turn things around. These are some harsh questions which eventually we need to answer, and yeah, ownership has to be taken,” he said.

With this win, PBKS moved to the top of the points table with four victories and one no-result, going past defending champions RCB. MI, meanwhile, slipped to ninth place with just one win in five matches.

Mumbai batted first and put up 195 for 6 on the board. Quinton de Kock played a superb innings with an unbeaten 112 off 60 balls. He got good support from Naman Dhir, who scored a quick 50, as the two added 122 runs together. Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the PBKS bowlers, finishing with 3 for 22.

Chasing 196, Punjab Kings made it look easy as they reached 198 for 3 in just 16.3 overs. Prabhsimran Singh led the charge with an unbeaten 80 off 39 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer added a fluent 66 off 35. The pair stitched together a crucial partnership after a shaky start. For Mumbai, Allah Ghazanfar took two wickets, but their bowling unit couldn’t stop PBKS from cruising to victory.
