FIFA World Cup: Switzerland outclass Algeria 2-0 to march into last 16

Switzerland booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Algeria on Thursday.

Breel Embolo gave the Swiss an early lead before Dan Ndoye added a second after the break to seal the victory. Switzerland will now return to Vancouver, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana in the next round.

Coach Murat Yakin got his tactics spot on as Switzerland produced a disciplined performance against an Algeria side managed by Vladimir Petkovic, who coached Switzerland between 2014 and 2021.

Switzerland were happy to soak up early pressure and hit Algeria on the counter-attack and the plan worked perfectly.

The opening goal came in the 10th minute after the Swiss won possession in their own half. Johan Manzambi raced down the left wing before squaring the ball for Embolo, who calmly finished from close range.

After taking the lead, Switzerland became even more compact in midfield, making it difficult for Algeria to create chances. Petkovic’s side enjoyed more possession but struggled to break through the Swiss defence.

Algeria’s best chance of the first half came in stoppage time when Ibrahim Maza dragged his shot just wide of the near post.

Switzerland doubled their lead soon after the restart. Algeria failed to clear the ball properly after an attack down the right, and Ndoye took full advantage by firing past goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez had a good opportunity to pull one back moments later, but his shot was blocked by a defender, capping a frustrating evening for his side.

With Granit Xhaka controlling the midfield and organising the team, Switzerland continued to defend patiently and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward on the counter. Algeria, meanwhile, were reluctant to commit too many players in attack, fearing another quick Swiss break.

Despite a packed BC Place crowd, the closing stages lacked excitement. The biggest chance came when Swiss substitute Fabian Rieder somehow missed an open goal, scuffing his shot back across goal and allowing Zidane to make a comfortable save.

The miss did not matter in the end, as Switzerland comfortably saw out the game to secure their place in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
