FIFA World Cup: Paraguay’s early strike sends Turkey out of tournament

Ten-man Paraguay kept their FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a gritty 1-0 win over Turkey in a Group D match on Friday, while the defeat ended Turkey’s chances of reaching the knockout stage.

Still hurting from their heavy 4-1 loss to the United States in their opening game, Paraguay made the perfect start. Matias Galarza scored after just 64 seconds with a powerful long-range strike, giving his side the fastest goal of the tournament so far.

From that moment on, Paraguay were forced to defend for long periods as Turkey piled on the pressure. Backed by the sound of drums and passionate support in the San Francisco Bay Area, the South Americans stood firm throughout the match.

Their task became even harder in the second half when Miguel Almiron was sent off after an incident involving Turkey defender Mert Muldur. Despite playing with 10 men, Paraguay held on for a famous victory.

Turkey controlled possession for most of the game and at one stage had nearly 80% of the ball. However, they were once again let down by poor finishing. They managed 32 shots but failed to score, similar to their opening defeat against Australia.

Kenan Yildiz and Arda Guler were both heavily involved and helped Turkey create numerous chances, but Paraguay’s defence remained disciplined and difficult to break down. Paraguay also looked dangerous on the counterattack whenever opportunities arose.

Paraguay are playing in their first World Cup since 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Spain in their best-ever tournament run.

Goalscorer Galarza described the victory as one of the best moments of his life.

“We showed our quality fighting spirits even with one player down. God wanted this to happen for Paraguay more than ever before,” he said.

Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella praised his players despite the defeat and elimination.

“I’m sad but I’m also very proud of my players. They gave everything right up until the final whistle. That’s what football’s like,” he said.
