FIFA World Cup: Araujo rescues Uruguay in draw against Saudi Arabia

Two veteran goalkeepers found themselves in the spotlight as Uruguay and Saudi Arabia played out a 1-1 draw in their opening Group H match at the World Cup 2026 on Monday. In the end, mistakes from both keepers led directly to the goals in a thrilling contest.

Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, making his 135th appearance for his country, was at fault resulting in Saudi Arabia’s opener. The 39-year-old failed to fend off the shot, pushing the ball into a dangerous area where Abdulelah Alamri reacted quickly to score from close range.

At the other end, Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais produced an impressive display for much of the game. He made nine saves in total, including six in the second half, as Uruguay piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser.

However, Alowais was eventually undone by an awkward bounce. He could only parry a shot into the path of Maxi Araujo, who calmly finished to bring Uruguay level.

Before kickoff, much of the focus had been on the coaching battle between Saudi Arabia’s Georgios Donis and Uruguay’s experienced manager Marcelo Bielsa.

However, Saudi Arabia suddenly began to look dangerous from set-pieces. Alamri first saw one effort saved, but he made no mistake with his next chance, taking advantage of Muslera’s error to put his side ahead.

Uruguay came out with much greater urgency after half-time. For long stretches, Muslera was almost a spectator as nearly every player on the field crowded into the Saudi half.

Wave after wave of Uruguay attacks followed. Their fans groaned every time Alowais made another save, punched away a cross or got a touch on a shot. Although the goalkeeper was outstanding for most of the game, he occasionally looked uncomfortable under pressure.

That pressure finally told when his parry fell straight to Araujo, who scored the equaliser.

Saudi Arabia were disappointed to concede, while Uruguay were energised by the goal and pushed hard for a winner, especially after seven minutes of added time were announced.

But Saudi Arabia held firm. Uruguay threw everyone forward for one last corner in the dying moments, yet the Saudis managed to survive until the final whistle.
