Following the Indian women’s cricket team’s historic victory over South Africa in the ODI World Cup, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Monday announced a sizable reward fund. The squad, together with the support crew, will receive a total prize money of Rs 51 crore in appreciation of their outstanding accomplishment, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia informed the media.
In the Women’s World Cup final, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, cementing their place in cricket history. The Indian team maintained composure under pressure to outperform Laura Wolvaardt’s squad with a dominant all-around performance.
Shafali Verma, who excelled with both bat and ball, emerged as the final’s star. The youthful opener, who entered the contest as a late substitute for Pratika Rawal, had an outstanding final innings of 87 runs. She added two vital wickets to her batting exploits, dismissing Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in the middle overs to give India a decisive advantage in the match.
“Last month, ICC Chairman Jay Shah announced a 300 percent increase in women’s prize money. Earlier, the prize fund was 3.88 million dollars, which has now been raised to 14 million dollars. In addition, the BCCI has decided to reward the entire Indian team — players, coaches, selectors, and support staff — with a total of Rs 51 crore,” Devajit Saikia said in an interview with ANI.
Prior to the competition, the ICC Women’s World Cup revealed a historic prize money. India received a huge compensation of Rs 37.3 crore from the ICC. These numbers represent a 239 percent increase in the winner’s reward from 2022, when Australia got almost Rs 11 crore.
Compared to the Rs 29 crore awarded in the 2022 competition in New Zealand, the overall prize fund for the 2025 Women’s World Cup is almost three times larger at Rs 116 crore. This year’s event is historic because it fulfills the ICC’s pledge to pay parity across genders by introducing equal prize money for the men’s and women’s World Cups for the first time. The prize money even exceeds the Rs 84 crore total from the 2023 Men’s World Cup.
