In an Indian Premier League run-fest on Saturday, Punjab Kings won by six wickets despite KL Rahul hitting an incredible unbeaten 152 and Delhi Capitals amassing what was momentarily the season’s highest total.
In an incredible display of T20 batting, 529 runs were amassed in 38.5 overs, with a total of 33 sixes hitting the ropes at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
After his team knocked down a record 265-run target with seven balls remaining, Punjab skipper Shreyas Iyer was left short of words.
“I’m running out of words, honestly speaking. We discussed that in the previous games, we chased around 220–225 with two overs left. So the mindset was very much similar,” said Iyer, who led by example with an unbeaten 71.
With their sixth victory in seven games, Punjab, who are vying for their first IPL title, solidified their top spot in the standings, while Delhi, who are halfway through their campaign, are ranked sixth.
After Rahul spearheaded Delhi’s attack with an incredible 67-ball knock that featured nine sixes and sixteen fours, the team appeared to be in control.
Delhi scored 264/2, their highest total in the 10-team league, because of the incredible 96-ball partnership between Rahul and Nitish Rana (91), who amassed 220 runs.
Punjab openers, Priyansh Arya (43) and Prabhsimran (76), chased a difficult score and immediately attacked Delhi spinners. They used bold power-hitting to plunder 116 runs in the first six powerplay overs, setting the stage for a victorious chase.
With the help of two reprieves that proved expensive, Iyer hit seven sixes in his 36-ball blitz to lead his team to victory. Karun Nair spilled both of the right-hander’s drops on 28 and 35.
“Looking at the kind of wicket, if you don’t support your bowlers and keep giving away so many chances, then I feel we deserved to lose,” Delhi captain Axar Patel said in a blunt assessment of his side’s fielding.
After suffering a head injury while fielding, Delhi fast bowler Lungi Ngidi left the game in an ambulance. The officials later stated that the South African was stable and would shortly be released from a Delhi hospital.
