When the Rajasthan Royals play the struggling Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL encounter in Lucknow on Wednesday, the middle order’s form — especially that of captain Riyan Parag — will be a major concern as they attempt to stop a decline following back-to-back losses.
The first edition champions, who are currently ranked third in the points table, started their campaign with four straight victories but have since struggled in their past two games.
They collapsed spectacularly, losing five wickets for nine runs against pace, and lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 57 runs.
Rinku Singh pulled off an incredible comeback to give the Kolkata Knight Riders their first victory in seven games this season after RR let a strong position slip in the match before that.
Parag, who was unexpectedly selected as their captain following Sanju Samon’s departure, has had a dismal batting form, scoring three single-digit runs in six innings with a maximum of just 20 thus far.
This season, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and Dhruv Jurel have been RR’s primary batsmen, although the team has frequently suffered when they faltered.
Veteran Ravindra Jadeja has appeared to be a shadow of his former self, Guyanese big-hitter Shimron Hetmyer (39 runs from four innings) is yet to fire, and Parag is dreadfully out of touch.
For RR, fielding has also been an issue. Rinku and Anukul Roy reversed the tide of the match in the final overs, as Nandre Burger’s error of dropping him on 8 proved costly.
Despite the failures, RR seems to be a more formidable team than LSG, who are currently in ninth place following three straight defeats.
With Sooryavanshi in excellent form and Jaiswal making steady starts, RR has one of the best opening duos this season. To remain competitive, LSG bowlers will need to make early breakthroughs.
That would prove difficult, though, after Punjab Kings destroyed LSG’s bowling attack. PBKS won by 54 runs after Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly drove them to 254/7, the season’s highest total.
In just 13.2 overs, Arya and Connolly amassed 182 runs for the second wicket, smashing the LSG attack.
While pacers Avesh Khan and Mohammed Shami have found it difficult to maintain control, Prince Yadav has been a rare bright spot with figures of 2/25. Additionally, Manimaran Siddharth has been expensive.
LSG intends to target the vulnerable middle order of RR. The batting unit for Lucknow appears uneasy as well, as they are still figuring out their best lineup.
Ayush Badoni was promoted to open alongside Mitchell Marsh, however this move was unsuccessful. Despite scoring consecutive 40s, Marsh has not converted starts, while captain Rishabh Pant has also struggled.
Their issues have been made worse by Nicholas Pooran’s poor form. LSG’s bowling and batting must work together to turn things around.
LSG vs RR Head-to-Head:
In their six encounters, the Rajasthan Royals have prevailed four times while the Lucknow Super Giants have only won twice.
LSG vs RR Pitch Report:
At Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, the average first innings score is 160. Although the conditions are favorable for spinners, seamers have recently taken the lead. Because of the dew effect later in the evening, the captain who wins the toss is expected to chase.
LSG vs RR Weather Report:
There will be light dew and a temperature of about 32 degrees Celsius in Lucknow.
