Adelaide Oval is considering an ambitious plan to host an Indian Premier League regular-season game as early as March of next year. This might be the IPL’s first-ever match in Australia.
Adelaide Oval chairman Jamie Briggs and South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) chief Will Rayner are the ones who came up with the proposal. In recent weeks, they have held first talks with important parties. Although the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has not yet been formally contacted, reports suggest that formal correspondence is anticipated shortly.
According to reports in SEN Cricket, the plan is a part of a larger plan that would also see a match played in Chennai by Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), perhaps establishing a reciprocal partnership between the two cricketing countries.
Adelaide Oval has shown interest in hosting the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final and is already establishing itself as a major international sporting destination. Officials think that hosting an IPL game there would increase the city’s visibility abroad.
Federal trade representatives and South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas are among the government officials who have been briefed informally. Both Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Cricket Australia, and Mike Baird, the chairman, are aware of the discussions.
Despite overlapping sporting calendars, Adelaide Oval officials think the venue can logistically change from a cricket ground to an AFL field in 48 hours, making a late-March IPL match possible. Because of the favorable weather, March is also regarded as perfect.
Recognizing the wider economic advantages such events can produce beyond direct expenditure, Tourism South Australia has shown early support.
Although the idea is still in its early phases and needs BCCI clearance, authorities think an IPL game in Adelaide might draw sizable crowds and a worldwide television audience.
Authorities in South Australia are optimistic about the move’s commercial and tourism prospects, inspired by the success of international leagues like the NFL that stage games abroad. Major sporting events like the Australian Football League’s (AFL) Gather Round and LIV Golf have historically been used by the region to increase tourism and international exposure.
