From T20 World Cup to Olympics: Suryakumar Yadav tested, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerges

Despite leading India to an outstanding T20 World Cup title defence, Suryakumar Yadav’s inconsistent batting form raises serious concerns about whether he will be included in the team’s 2028 Olympic campaign in Los Angeles.

In light of this, the captain’s June–July tour of England and Ireland will be significant since, in addition to his captaincy, his batting will be scrutinized.

The tour may determine whether he gets an additional two years before the next round of major events in 2028, which includes the Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, who anticipates a contract renewal until the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia, continues to favor Suryakumar.

The T20 captain will be approaching 38 by the time of the Olympics, so it will be interesting to see if the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee shares his opinion.

“Obviously Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based,” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying on conditions of anonymity.

Suryakumar’s strike rate fell to less than 120 in 2025, and he was unable to score a single fifty. It changed in 2026, when he struck four half-centuries at a respectable strike rate of 160 or more till the end of the T20 World Cup.

However, Suryakumar didn’t have any noteworthy performances at the T20 World Cup, with the exception of the opening match against the USA. His scores against major teams were 18 against South Africa, 18 against the West Indies, 11 against England in the semi-final, and 0 against New Zealand in the final.

Suryakumar needs to rediscover the consistency that keeps him strong in the face of India’s formidable firepower in the top three and the untapped potential of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The list of 35 T20 specialists selected by the national selectors as possible players for the June–July T20I portion of the Ireland tour includes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s name.

Sooryavanshi, who will be just a few months away from turning sixteen, would undoubtedly surpass Sachin Tendulkar as the youngest member of the senior India men’s team. The selection panel is debating whether it will be the tour of Ireland in June, the subsequent trip to Zimbabwe, one of the West Indies’ home Twenty20 Internationals, or the Asian Games in Japan in September.

“The selectors were asked by the BCCI logistics department to give at least 35 names whose Irish visa needed to be kept sorted. Since the Indian team’s first port of entry will be Ireland and not England, the UK visa won’t work. Everyone requires separate Irish visa,” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

Although selectors may decide to choose 16 or 17 instead of 15, it is acknowledged that this would be too many for a two-game series in Belfast.

“The selection committee is convinced that Vaibhav is ready but then you are talking about Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. All three are half centurions in the T20 World Cup final. If you take a fourth opener, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there,” the source said.

“Vaibhav is ready but national selectors need to give very good reasons to drop Abhishek or Sanju. Because if you drop either one, question arises how is Surya keeping his place?” the source added.

When would Sooryavanshi debut, then?

“It could be the UK tour or Zimbabwe. But the best platform could be Asian Games or the West Indies home series as these two are overlapping so there will be two T20 squads. Vaibhav will play one of the two if not earlier,” the source said.
