IPL 2026: KKR slump deepens as Heinrich Klaasen powers Sunrisers Hyderabad to big win

Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 65 runs riding on Heinrich Klaasen’s experience-driven half-century in their IPL match in Kolkata on Thursday.

After KKR decided to bowl, Sunrisers Hyderabad made a competitive 226/8 thanks to Klaasen’s 52 from 35 balls, despite Blessing Muzarabani’s 4/41.

After losing their opener game to the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede, KKR struggled to gain pace as they were bundled out for 161 and suffered their second straight loss.

With a batting-heavy team that included Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh, Finn Allen, and Cameron Green—the IPL’s most expensive international acquisition at Rs 25.20 crore—the objective at the free-flowing Eden appeared to be par.

It required a partnership in the middle, but the KKR lineup’s lack of compatibility was evident as they were only able to endure 16 overs.

They were further handicapped by the fact that their mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, returned with 0/31 from two overs after giving up 25 runs in one over. Narine (0/39) finished his four overs without a wicket as well.

Ehsan Malinga (2/14 in two overs) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (2/17 in two overs) were also successful for SRH, while left-arm bowler Jaydev Unadkat took 3/21 from three overs, including Rahane’s wicket.

While partnerships failed to form, KKR’s seasoned captain Ajinkya Rahane’s agonizing 8 off 10 balls once again called into doubt the team’s audacious leadership decision.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi showed promise with a lightning-fast 52 (29 balls; 6×4, 2×6), but he got no support from the other end.

Kiwi opener Finn Allen showed early promise in a seven-ball 28 (4×4, 2×6), following his 100 not out in the T20 World Cup semifinal against South Africa a month earlier on the same pitch. However, the innings swiftly came apart after he was caught by Harsh Dubey with a return catch.

After a messy mix-up with Raghuvanshi, who played the shot, KKR’s star recruit Green suffered another setback, running out for two. However, Green was off the crease when Malinga used his foot to stop the ball. Raghuvanshi began to make his way back, but the Australian had to leave after a review revealed that Green had not passed.

KKR’s predicament was summed up when Raghuvanshi, who led the team in scoring, was run out due to yet another error. Soon after Anukul Roy’s dismissal, half the team was back in the pavilion, leaving the chase in ruins. Rinku Singh, the vice-captain, put up a brief fight with a 35 off 25 balls, but all hopes were dashed when he was dismissed by Reddy.

Earlier, Muzarabani led the Kolkata Knight Riders with a four-wicket haul, but Klaasen’s valiant half-century helped Sunrisers Hyderabad reach a challenging 226/8.

In just 34 deliveries, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma put on a thrilling 82-run opening partnership, with Head returning to form with a scorching 46 off 21 balls and Sharma hammering 48 off 21.

Ajinkya Rahane’s decision to bowl gave SRH a head start at almost 15 runs per over, which was concerning for KKR’s inexperienced bowling attack.

But things quickly shifted in favor of the home team as Muzarabani took two wickets in three deliveries, dismissing captain Ishan Kishan (14) and a well-set Abhishek, after Kartik Tyagi broke the opening stand by dismissing the threatening Head. SRH were cruising at over 14 runs per over and at 110/1 in eight overs when they abruptly lost steam, losing three wickets for just seven runs.

As SRH lost three wickets in seven deliveries, KKR tightened the screws even further when spinner Anukul Roy, their sixth bowling option, dismissed Aniket Verma (1).

Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy were compelled to take on a rebuilding task as boundaries dried up and momentum changed. In response, the two put together a fifty-plus stand and positioned themselves for a late surge.

Even though Klaasen’s calm fifty insured that SRH surpassed the 220-mark, Vaibhav Arora delivered vital blows in the closing stages, including the dismissal of Reddy (39). However, in the last over, the tall Zimbabwean bowler claimed the wickets of Shivang Kumar (4) and Klaasen (52 from 35 balls), taking his tally to 4/41.

If there isn’t an early breakthrough, SRH can become a runaway express, and that’s precisely what happened at the Eden. Head got off to a little nervous start, scoring one run off his first four balls, but he quickly changed course and went ballistic around the tiny Eden boundaries.

He hit five fours and two sixes in his next nine deliveries after hitting one off four, as SRH accelerated at a rate of almost fifteen runs per over on the power play. Head was in full flow as Arora tried to cram him for space by focusing on the pads.

Head set the tone by sending Arora straight down the ground for a six and then neatly lobbing him over square leg with to the pitch’s genuine bounce and velocity.

The inexperienced bowling attack of KKR started to bother them once more. There was a brief opportunity when Head miscued one in the direction of additional cover, and Sunil Narine was brought early. However, the Australian was fortunate since captain Rahane was unable to reach the ball due to his backpedaling.

Abhishek played second fiddle at first, scoring just nine off seven balls, while Head dominated early.

However, he blasted three fours and a six in four deliveries against his India teammate Varun Chakravarthy, helping SRH reach 71 for no loss in just five overs.

Chakravarthy, who has been going through a rough patch since the T20 World Cup, gave up 25 runs in his opening over. After that, Ishan Kishan joined the fray and hit three straight boundaries off Kartik Tyagi.

However, KKR’s fortunes were turned around by a brilliant move to bring in Muzarabani in the ninth over. Rinku Singh’s skill on the field was what made the difference; there was no miraculous delivery. Before Varun finished a low catch off Abhishek’s pull, which seemed to be a close call, he first pouched a beautiful catch close to the deep cover-point boundary to eliminate Kishan. The sixth bowling option for KKR Rinku was back in the heart of things after Anukul Roy delivered a third strike.
