Pakistan batsman Salman Agha has received criticism from the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his response to a contentious run-out during Friday’s second One-Day International against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
Agha was leaning down to return the ball to Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz after his partner Mohammad Rizwan had drove it in his direction, just short of his crease at the non-striker’s end.
But Miraz went around behind Agha to catch the ball and threw it down the stumps and triggered a discussion about “sportsman spirit”.
After being dismissed, an enraged Agha flung down his helmet and gloves, earning him a demerit point from the world governing body of the sport.
In a statement, the ICC claimed that Agha had violated a provision of the Code of Conduct concerning the misuse of clothing or equipment during an international match.
Following the game, Mehidy stated that he had been anticipating Agha to try a run.
“He was away from the wicket and I was just looking for the ball,” he said. “If you miss, he would go for the run. So I was just thinking like that.”
The series is now level at 1-1 after Pakistan won the game by 128 runs. The series decider is set for later on Sunday.
