Jayden Lennox, a left-arm orthodox bowler, has received his maiden call-up to the New Zealand team for the January white ball tour of India.
Mitchell Santner and Kyle Jamieson were both selected for the ODI and T20I series. As part of his return-to-play strategy while he heals from his groin injury, Santner has only been included in the T20 squad. In Twenty20 Internationals, he will captain the Black Caps.
Due to his SA20 league obligations, Kane Williamson is not available for ODI selection.
In Santner’s absence, Michael Bracewell will captain the team for the one-day series. Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Will Young, and Henry Nicholls make up an experienced leadership group.
Along with the uncapped Kristian Clarke and up-and-coming internationals Adi Ashok, Josh Clarkson, Nick Kelly, and Michael Rae, a recent Test debutant, Lennox has been chosen in the ODI squad.
Rob Walter, the head coach, expressed his satisfaction with Lennox’s advancement through the NZC high performance scheme.
“Jayden has been an identified player of interest for some time and has some good New Zealand “A” experience under his belt. He’s consistently been one of the top performers in white-ball cricket domestically for a number of seasons,” he said in a release.
Both front-line seam bowler Matt Henry and Test captain Tom Latham will be absent from the ODI series. Henry is still recovering from a recent calf rupture prior to the T20 series and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in February, while Latham is staying in New Zealand for the birth of his third child.
Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs, two batters, return to the T20 team after putting on some outstanding performances for their home teams. Ish Sodhi and James Neesham return to the team as well; Neesham recently participated in the ILT20 and Nepal Premier League.
Sodhi returns from Canterbury’s domestic duties. After making an impression during the domestic summer, newly signed IPL players Jacob Duffy and Zak Foulkes were given the go-ahead. Foulkes will play T20 cricket in India for the first time.
As soon as their franchise commitments are fulfilled, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Finn Allen, and Tim Seifert will join the team in India. This will enable them to play in the last stages of the T20 series in India prior to the T20 World Cup.
Due to their ongoing return-to-play plans, Nathan Smith (side), Blair Tickner (shoulder), and Mark Chapman (ankle) were not selected for the ODI series. Chapman is expected to participate in the T20 series.
New Zealand will begin their three-match ODI series against India in Vadodara on January 11, before the tour shifts to a five-match T20I series starting in Nagpur on January 21.
