India’s attempt to set a world record in the series-deciding third match against Australia failed in a 43-run loss in New Delhi on Saturday, despite Smriti Mandhana recording the second-fastest century in women’s ODIs.
Following Mandhana’s dismissal at 125 (63 balls, 17×4, 5×6), India faltered to collapse at 369 in 47 overs in response to Australia’s massive 412 all out, their joint-highest innings total ever.
Mandhana broke the mark set by former Australian batter Karen Rolton (from 57 balls) against South Africa in 2000-01 by reaching 100 off just 50 balls. With a 45-ball century against New Zealand in the 2012–13 season, former Australian captain Meg Lanning tops the list of fastest century makers.
The day’s highlight was Beth Mooney, who led her team to an incredible total with a scorching 138 off just 75 balls (23×4, 1×6) for her fourth WODI ton.
She and Ellyse Perry (68 off 70 balls) shared a third-wicket partnership of 106 runs. Georgia Voll, who opened with 81 off 61 balls, gave Australia the spark they needed.
