FIFA World Cup: France face giant-killers Morocco in high-stakes quarter-final

France, the favorites for the World Cup, will face their most difficult test of the competition when they play high-flying Morocco in the quarterfinals, in a rematch of the 2022 semi-final that halted the Atlas Lions’ historic run in Qatar.

Although France’s World Cup campaign has already put their strength, endurance, and composure to the test, Didier Deschamps’ team will get something new when they play Morocco in the quarterfinals: their first comprehensive football analysis of the competition.

The match is a replay of the 2022 World Cup semi-final in Qatar, where France stopped Morocco’s historic run. This time, however, the North Africans approach as a confident, talented team that has been transparent about their desire to win the tournament rather than as unexpected outsiders.

After defeating Paraguay 1-0 in a match that required more patience and spirit than skill, France advanced to the round of eight. France had to find a way through a densely packed defensive structure as Paraguay sat deep and slowed the flow.

With Kylian Mbappé scored his seventh goal at this World Cup, Deschamps’ team accomplished enough, but the performance also showed that a team whose offensive prowess has carried them through much of the competition is starting to face more difficult problems in the knockout round.

The challenge will be different against Morocco. Mohamed Ouahbi’s team has demonstrated that they are capable of suffering, controlling possession spells, and punishing opponents quickly and accurately.

After going undefeated in the group stage, their 3-0 victory over Canada in the round of 16 validated the idea that they were developing into the tournament.

With seven points from games against Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti, Morocco had already demonstrated their ability in a challenging group. Their performances supported their declared view that they are not just here to replicate the emotional charge of 2022.

In contrast, Morocco’s combination of technical excellence, athletic intensity, and self-belief has not yet been faced by France. In the round of 32, Paraguay offered resistance but did not present the same footballing threat as Morocco, while Sweden was easily defeated.

If France’s forward quintet can continue to control the tournament against opponents that can damage them in transition and challenge their defensive balance, the quarterfinal should provide the clearest indicator so far.

Morocco is set to be without important striker Ismael Saibari, and they will likely be without midfielder Aurěen Tchouameni due to a muscular ailment.

France has one of the most dangerous attacking lines at the World Cup with to Mbappé, Ousmane Dembé, Michael Olise, and Bradley Barcola, but Morocco’s organization and confidence should give a more comprehensive picture of the team beneath the famous names.
