
Mirabai Chanu, a two-time Commonwealth Games winner, will lead India’s weightlifting team at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games starting on July 23. Chanu will compete in the women’s 48kg division.
She has won two gold and one silver medal in the Commonwealth Games. Punjab’s Harjinder Kaur (69 kg) and fellow Manipuri lifter Bindyarani Devi (58 kg), who both took home silver medals from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, will accompany her.
Lovepreet Singh (+110 kg), a bronze medallist from Birmingham, will lead the men’s team, which also includes Commonwealth Games rookies Rishikanta Singh (60 kg), Ajaya Babu (79 kg), and Dilbag Singh (94 kg). The SEC Armadillo will host the weightlifting competitions from July 26 to July 30. After a conditioning session in Birmingham on Sunday, the Indian team is expected to travel to Glasgow on July 23.
In recent Commonwealth Games, India has dominated weightlifting, taking first place in the medal standings in both 2018 and 2022. At the 2018 Gold Coast Games, the nation earned nine medals, including five gold. In 2022, it won ten medals, including three gold, in Birmingham.
