FIFA World Cup: Netherlands finish top as Tunisia bow out with 3-1 defeat

The Netherlands booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 as Group F winners with a comfortable 3-1 win over Tunisia on Thursday. The Dutch took full advantage of another disappointing performance from Tunisia to set up a knockout clash with Morocco.

Although heavy rain and a thunderstorm warning threatened to disrupt the match, kickoff went ahead as planned. The Netherlands wasted no time, racing into a two-goal lead inside the opening seven minutes, their fastest start to a World Cup match since 2002.

Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri accidentally turned Denzel Dumfries’ cross into his own net in the third minute, before Brian Brobbey doubled the lead four minutes later with his third goal of the tournament.

Tunisia gave themselves hope when Hazem Mastouri headed home from a Hannibal Mejbri corner in the 54th minute, but the comeback was short-lived. Just eight minutes later, Jan Paul van Hecke restored the Dutch two-goal advantage with a powerful header from Tijjani Reijnders’ corner.

Tunisia’s campaign ended on another disappointing note. After heavy defeats to Japan and Sweden, along with a coaching change after their opening match, they struggled once again and never really looked capable of troubling the Dutch.

More than 68,000 fans attended the match despite the wet conditions, with some leaving early once the result was beyond doubt. The heavy rain did little to affect the game or dampen the atmosphere.

Tunisia almost made the perfect start when Ismael Gharbi missed a clear chance in the second minute. Moments later, however, the Netherlands took the lead through Skhiri’s unfortunate own goal.

The Dutch quickly doubled their advantage when Virgil van Dijk headed a free kick back across goal, allowing Brobbey to finish from close range.

After the early flurry of goals, the Netherlands remained in control for most of the match. Tunisia briefly threatened after Mastouri’s goal, but Van Hecke’s header soon ended any hopes of a comeback. Reijnders later struck the crossbar as the Dutch pushed for a fourth goal.

With the result under control, Koeman rested several key players ahead of the knockout stage. Brobbey, Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong were all substituted in the second half, while Memphis Depay came off the bench in the 77th minute and nearly scored with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

It was a tournament to forget for Tunisia, who conceded 12 goals in three matches despite arriving with a strong defensive reputation after qualifying without letting in a single goal.
