Although it was tough to determine what caused Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s on-field dispute with a Sri Lanka A player, India spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule stated on Tuesday that the adolescent batting star will learn from the event and steer clear of similar issues in the future.
After India’s Super Over loss to Sri Lanka A in the tri-series encounter in Dambulla on Monday, the 15-year-old got into a furious argument that almost turned physical.
“It was an unfortunate incident, but we don’t know how he was provoked because I know him and Vaibhav is a very composed kid but I’m sure there are experienced coaches there who will guide him,” PTI quoted Bahutule as saying on the eve of India’s second ODI against Afghanistan in Lucknow.
“Sri Lankan players should also be educated on how to behave,” he added.
At the age-group level, Bahutule has collaborated closely with Sooryavanshi at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence and in several India U-19 setups. When Sooryavanshi made his IPL debut in 2025, Bahutule was also the spin-bowling coach for the Rajasthan Royals.
“He will learn, he is a young kid with a lot of responsibility of representing India. I’m sure he will not repeat it and such incidents can be avoided,” the former Mumbai skipper said.
The incident happened following Sri Lanka A’s thrilling Super Over victory. After the game, Sooryavanshi and his batting partner Suryansh Shedge started making their way back to the pavilion as the home team celebrated the win.
Before senior player Niroshan Dickwella intervened to separate the players, an enraged Sooryavanshi was shown on television pushing Sri Lankan spinner Vishen Halambage.
After successfully limiting the Indian batter during the Super Over, the trigger seemed to be something stated by both the bowler and the fielder.
Sooryavanshi was clearly frustrated by India’s inability to chase the target in the fading light as he made his way back to the pavilion.
