BCCI stands firm on overseas player rules, backs 94-match IPL plan

Despite franchises’ worries during the most recent edition, the BCCI has no intention of serving as a mediator between international players and their individual teams about their availability for the IPL.

Foreign recruits who withdraw from the competition after being purchased at auction are prohibited by the BCCI, yet player availability during the two-month IPL is still a problem.

Due to niggles, players like Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc were sidelined for the first part of the competition. Starc’s absence in the first half had a negative effect on the Delhi Capitals.

Following their play-off campaign, Kumar Sangakkara, the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals, voiced his dissatisfaction about Sam Curran playing T20 at home in the UK after he ruled himself out of the IPL due to an injury.

Mohit Burman, a co-owner of the Punjab Kings, stated that the BCCI and other boards should better coordinate the availability of international recruits.

“We were told that Sam Curran had a season-ending injury, but I think I saw him playing for Surrey for two or three games now. So that was disappointing,” Sangakkara had said.

However, the BCCI believes that since “they are the custodians of the players,” the player and his franchise should resolve the controversial matter.

The players are free to make their own decisions after consulting with the franchise, and the Board believes that the two-year penalty for last-minute withdrawals is a sufficient deterrence.

To put things in perspective, it is revealed that Archer made himself accessible for the entire tournament even though the ECB wanted to control his workload.

The BCCI believes that the player and his team should resolve the controversial matter.

“The team are the custodians of the players. We leave it to them and their understanding with the players. Some players decide IPL over national duty and some vice versa. Our rules are clear unless there is an injury (the two-year ban),” PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying referring to the case involving Jofra Archer.

Despite the ECB’s desire to control his workload, Archer, who plays for the Royals, made himself available for the entire tournament. “As far as Curran is concerned, the franchise would know what to do for next season,” the source said.

Even if the current auction is valued at Rs 125 crore, the players’ contracts still fall short of those in the NFL or European football.

The BCCI opposes a large boost but is amenable to a gradual increase in the future. It worries that having more money available to teams could result in unreasonable bidding, as was the case with Chris Morris in 2021, when he became the most expensive recruit in the league at the time.

It is important to note that in addition to their contractual income, the players receive additional sponsorship during the tournament and match fees of Rs 7.5 lakh every game.

Starting in the 2028 season, the BCCI intends to expand the number of games from 74 to 94, which would necessitate a larger timeslot.

The ideal window is from the first week of March until the middle of May, according to BCCI sources. The 2026 competition got off at the end of March, with the final taking place on May 31. After the 2027 cycle, the media rights will be available for renewal, at which point all parties involved will need to assess the viability of future bilateral series.

Unlike in the past, the majority of Test-playing countries have their own T20 leagues and are not totally reliant on hosting an India series. Some of the bilateral series are already deemed unworthy by the broadcaster. Nearly empty stands saw the recent one-off Test between India and Afghanistan.
